The shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. during a party at a short-term rental property with more than 200 people – many of them minors, Pittsburgh police said in a press release. At least 11 people are being treated for gunshot wounds and two male victims have died at the hospital, police said.
Others were injured trying to flee, with at least two people having broken bones jumping out of the building windows, authorities said. Arriving police said they heard gunshots in the area and saw several young men leaving the area on foot and in vehicles, police said.
Police said up to 50 bullets were fired inside and several others were shot outside. Rifles and pistol shells were found at the scene, Pittsburgh Police Chief John Fisher told WTAE-TV. Police are processing evidence in up to eight separate crime scenes spanning several blocks around the shooting scene, police said.
“You have alcohol, you have minors here and you have guns – this is a deadly combination in any kind of event and the end result is that it is a tragedy,” Fisher told WPXI-TV.
The names of the two young men who lost their lives were not immediately known. No arrests were reported immediately and police did not immediately release any information about the suspects.
