According to a police press release, investigators monitored the artwork in East Vancouver and retrieved it Thursday afternoon. The 90 pound piece, part of the “Vessels” series handmade by The artist Marie Khouri based in BCwas stolen on April 3 just before 4 p.m. PT, according to police. Security shots taken that night show a man removing the statue from its pedestal before throwing it at a doll, according to hospital officials. A few days before it was taken, the sculpture was installed outside one of the hospital entrances on Oak Street as part of a shelter for patients and their families. Flowers were planted around the base of the pedestal. Malcolm Berry, president and CEO of the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, said it was “fantastic news” to learn that the sculpture had been found. “A work of art like this piece, carefully created from world renown[ed] artist Marie Khouri, is an important aspect of the therapeutic environment in the hospital. “We are truly grateful for the support of the Vancouver Police Department in recovering this important work,” Berry said in a written statement. No one has been arrested in connection with the theft, but police say the investigation is still active and police are collecting evidence.
