In recent footage shared online of Russia’s efforts to transport supplies, troops and civilians across the Dnieper, metal objects can be seen floating in the water next to the Antonivskyi Bridge. The same countermeasure was apparently used last month, when Kremlin forces were spotted moving barges covered in radar reflectors along the Kerch Strait Bridge, which connects Crimea to mainland Russia, to protect it from possible airstrikes. Warzone analysts, however, questioned the effectiveness of the reflectors’ abilities to protect against Heimar bombardment. “These radar reflectors would probably not be successful in confusing a Chimari missile attack, since the munitions are not guided by radar, making the newly discovered ‘ghost’ radar reflectors a somewhat confusing addition,” wrote Emma Helfrich and Tyler Rogoway. Instead, the authors suggested the “crude and enigmatic countermeasure” would be more effective against the US-supplied Harpoon and Neptune anti-ship missiles, which are not designed for such land-based attacks.
