JEREMIAS GONZALEZ / ASSOCIATED PRESS There is no doubt that under the avalanche of misery and death launched by the Russian armed forces, a new and stronger sense of Ukrainian nationality is being formed. Citizens from all regions and from all backgrounds have gathered. In the resilience of Kharkiv, the defense of Kiev, the refusal to leave the Peninsula and the fires of the ruined Mariupol, a lasting national identity is forged. If Ukraine can continue the near-miracle of holding back Putin’s war machine, its people will celebrate for generations the ingenuity and disobedience of their common defense, while mourning the many thousands already killed in its execution. And their knowledge of the horrific war crimes committed against their compatriots will make them determined never to be burned by Russia.
