A statement released by the Penticton Peach Festival, where the Snowbirds were scheduled to perform Wednesday, said a Royal Canadian Air Force flight safety team is to investigate the cause of the incident. “The CF Snowbirds said, while disappointed they were unable to perform, they wish both the Peach Festival and everyone in attendance the best,” a statement from festival organizers said. The Canadian Forces Skyhawks will continue play in Penticton on Wednesday. They and the Snowbirds will participate in other festival events, such as peach bucket races and a meet-and-greet. The Snowbirds also canceled their appearance at the Abbotsford International Airshow held over the weekend. “We wish all the best to the attendees and participants,” the team said in a social media post. The incident that led to the cancellations unfolded around noon Tuesday near the North Peace Regional Airport in Fort St. John. “The aircraft was able to land at the airport but sustained some damage to the aircraft in the process,” a statement from the Royal Canadian Air Force said. “The sole passenger (pilot) was not injured and is being examined by medical personnel.” In 2020, Capt. Jennifer Casey of the Snowbirds died when her plane crashed in Kamloops, BC An investigation revealed that a small bird flew into the plane’s engine shortly after takeoff from Fulton Field at the city’s airport, causing it to lose power. The pilot gave the command to eject, but the plane was too low for Casey to safely deploy her parachute. The Snowbirds remained on the ground for three months after her death.
