SWAT officers in armored vehicles surrounded an apartment complex near 66th Street and Osborn Road around 4:30 p.m. of Sunday. After hours of negotiations with authorities, 35-year-old Nicolas Cowan was taken into custody without “significant use of force”, according to police. Cowan is wanted in connection with an incident of domestic violence on Thursday in which he allegedly shot and injured a police officer. Preliminary information provided by police on Sunday night shows that Cowan suffered multiple gunshot wounds believed to have come from Thursday’s incident. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Cowan reportedly received help from many acquaintances and moved to several locations in the valley before the Scottsdale apartment complex was located. Police issued a total of four search warrants in connection with the manhunt. At least one person, identified by police as Nicole Montalbano, is facing charges of interfering in court proceedings in connection with Cowan’s alleged assistance. Records show that Montalbano has been detained by officials twice in the last two days. Mayor Williams thanked the community for their help with advice about Cowan. “It was a piece of advice tonight that led us to where we are today,” said Chief Williams. It is unclear whether the tip received will win the $ 35,000 announced reward for information. Witnesses at the scene told ABC15 that they saw Cowan earlier in the day and heard police repeatedly calling him out immediately. Nick Jara, the band’s property manager, took to the stage after one of his employees found the apartment door locked. “One of our employees came to the unit … and the clerk found that the door was locked and at that point, the clerk looked out the window, saw that there was furniture [blocking] the door, “said Jara. Jara tells ABC15 that the house is not under Cowan’s name. Phoenix police said the search for Cowan, in which several associates were involved, including the FBI, the ATF, the Prescott police and the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, was a 24/7 operation. Phoenix Police Department Police say the injured man, a 24-year-old veteran of the police station, remains in the intensive care unit in stable condition and is “well” after successful surgery on Thursday to remove a bullet. On Sunday, before his arrest, Police Chief Jerry Williams said, “These attacks that are taking place in our backyard and throughout our country show a blatant contempt for human life and law enforcement.” He went on to say, “Despite these attacks on our police family, our officers continue to respond to calls for service to ensure the safety of our community. We are committed to finding the criminal who attacked one of our own. “This commitment extends to all victims of crime.” DPS officials have turned off the “Blue Alert” in connection with this suspicious investigation. Police have not yet announced what charges Cowan will face.
