(Bay d’Espoir Motorway via Department of Transport.) Wildfires in central Newfoundland are growing in size, and plans to sporadically open the Bay d’Espoir Highway have been scrapped. Forestry crews are assessing the situation but should spend the day fighting the fire on the 13th. Mother Nature is not doing them any favors with heat warnings, lightning and no rain of any consequence. Fire Duty Officer Jeff Motty says the best they can do right now is open it tomorrow. The forest department wants cabin owners in the Bay d’Espoir highway area to leave the area. The department says anyone with cabins or campers around Great Rattling Brook (North and South), Miguel and Martin Lake, Tote Brook, Paradise Lake, Sunday Pond and North West Gander River should leave as the wildfire is extremely active . 2/3: Safety is paramount. Residents, cabin owners and campers are urged to evacuate their cabins and avoid affected areas, including forest access roads. Resources have started arriving from Quebec and support efforts are expected to begin tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/y7Q3DPsWvU — Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture NL (@FFA_GovNL) August 4, 2022
