The City of Toronto recently made the decision to open up the market more as part of a one-year pilot project, following a review of its hours of operation that included feedback from the public and an assessment of how “improving the operation can better serve Toronto residents and visitors to the city.”
“The revised opening hours will make the market more accessible, with service hours that respond to the changing needs and preferences of visitors. The changes include opening the market on Sundays and later morning hours and later evening closing hours on weekdays,” they said in a statement.
“As Toronto’s economy recovers, the market is now able to resume extended hours.”
The city said the outcome of this pilot will “mean a more permanent operating schedule for the remainder of 2023 and beyond.”
Dealers were notified three months in advance of these changes. Management has and will continue to work with merchants to help them find the necessary staff to “adequately operate the new hours.”
In March 2020, St. Lawrence Market was in the process of starting a pilot project to extend its hours of operation, but that initiative was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the market’s opening hours were modified and substantially reduced to align with the health and safety measures of COVID-19.
“In 2020 we moved as COVID-19 affected previous launch plans, we are now moving forward with this exciting pilot. The new hours pilot streamlines the market’s operations and ensures that more people – residents and visitors to our city – have the opportunity to experience this amazing, historic Toronto destination,” said Mayor John Tory in a statement.
“It is very exciting that the St. Lawrence will relaunch extended hours. I want to thank the many businesses that make the market so special.”
