— Cambridge Fire Dept (@CambridgeFD) July 30, 2022 They say the fire was “fully involved” when they arrived and had to fight it from a defensive position. “You could see nothing but smoke at one point,” said witness Kristy Holdaway. “It’s sad for the owners, you know, being at the park, you know the owners, and they’ve had a lot of difficulties this year, so it’s sad for them.” The Old Marina restaurant on Lake Puslinch is on fire. No injuries have been reported. “We believe the area of origin is in the basement,” said Puslinch Fire Chief Tom Mulvey. “Unfortunately we couldn’t take a look around to see what the cause was. We do not consider it suspicious at this time. “This is going to be a total loss of the building. We’re going to have some crews go in there after that and we’re confident it’s safe to do so. We’ll take a look around, but it looks like a total loss fire.” Firefighters from Kitchener and Guelph were also called to assist. “It didn’t look too bad at first and then all of a sudden I could see the flames coming and the windows going out,” said witness Albert Christian. Around 3:45 p.m., the OPP tweeted that Lake Road was closed between Wellington Road 32 and Townline Road for the fire. “For an hour there were no flames, just smoke, and then the flames came,” said witness Mona Ghaenizadeh. “It was very sad to see the eyes of the owner and all the people at the park. We love and care for them, they serve the community and so many others. People come from all over Ontario to dine there. My heart goes out to them.” This is the second fire at the restaurant since it opened in the 1990s. “It’s just a sad day,” Holdaway said. “Lots of memories. Lots of history.” “People come from all over to come here. It’s hard to get reservations in here. It’s always packed, it’s always booked, and it’s not just a restaurant, there’s activities, people booking their weddings here.” Mulvey added that an excavator will be brought in to try to remove the roof to help deal with hot spots inside the building.
