This year, many people were convicted of savage attacks on well-known nightclubs in Birmingham and the Black Country. Such incidents are a nightmare for the very places that are unjustly but inevitably tarnished. We have collected some of the main cases under which they all resulted in immediate prison sentences due to the seriousness of the attack. Tragically, in more than one case the result was the loss of a life causing devastation to families who saw their loved ones go out to have fun but never returned home. Zechelle Reid

Zechelle Reid (Image: WMP) A large crowd outside the Digbeth’s Lab 11 nightclub saw a murder unfold before their eyes thanks to Zechelle Reid, who killed a man for allegedly “disrespecting”. CCTV recorded the knife that “mouth” something to Jason Bendley-Morrison, who punched him in obvious retaliation. The two of them quarreled against each other in the street as a large gathering followed them opposite. At one point the 25-year-old victim was hit on the floor and when witnesses took care of him they saw that he had been stabbed in the abdomen, which turned out to be fatal. Reid was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum sentence of 20 years. The whole story here

Jason Delaney

Jason Delaney (Image: WMP) Jason Delaney triggered a police siege after attacking a retiree at the Sportsmans Rest pub in Kingstanding. He later told police officers waiting outside his home that he had a grenade and a machine gun. Delaney hit the 72-year-old victim in the head for allegedly refusing to reveal the whereabouts of a convicted sex offender he was looking for. The victim also cut off his head from another attacker as he was lying on the floor. When police intercepted Delaney at his home, they gave them a phone call, claiming that he was “dangerous” and that he would “blow you all up”. The 49-year-old from Newstead Road, Kingstanding admitted that he intentionally injured and threatened to kill. He was imprisoned for five years. The whole story here

Jack Richardson

Jack Richardson (Image: West Midlands Police) Jack Richardson used his car as a weapon as he entered a crowd outside the Gigmill pub in Stoubridge, leaving a pregnant woman trapped under the spinning wheel of the vehicle. Initially, the 25-year-old shot with a BB gun at his ex-girlfriend’s new partner before plowing his Volvo into the group of people where he was standing. His main target suffered an ankle fracture in the incident. Richardson, of West Street, Stourbridge, pleaded guilty to two counts of grievous bodily harm, two counts of actual bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent, possession of cannabis and driving without insurance. He was sentenced to five years in prison. The whole story here

Thomas McDermott

Thomas McDermott (Image: WMP) Thomas McDermott hit a man so hard that he lost hearing in one ear. He hit the victim, in his 20s, from behind in a bar in Acocks Green, breaking his jaw, his teeth and causing bleeding in the brain. The unprovoked attack also made him unconscious. McDermott, 29, of Brays Road, Sheldon, surrendered after police issued a media appeal with his picture. He admitted his injury and was jailed for four years. The whole story here

Matthew Mahony

Matthew Mahony (Image: WMP) The revelers in downtown Birmingham were terrified when a man was killed with a deadly punch outside Slug and Lettuce. There was a commotion inside the Brindleyplace bar earlier in the evening as Matthew Carroll, 50, was celebrating his son’s birthday. Further problems followed later in the night as they left the area. Matthew Mahony was among the crowd and although he was not present at Slug and Lettuce earlier, he aimed at Mr. Carroll and gave him a “cheap shot” punch in the face that broke his jaw and hit him on the ground. The blow proved fatal. Mahony, in his 30s and from Edgbaston, admitted to negligent homicide, but his claims that he acted in defense of his friends were rejected. He was imprisoned for five years. Ravinder Soni

Ravinder Soni Ravinder Sonny and an accomplice plowed a car in three bounces – after Sonny picked up his phone earlier in the night. The 31-year-old was involved in an incident with a doorman at the Floodgate Bar in Digbeth. About 40 minutes later he returned to chase them with the other man. The first guard was quickly hit by their Audi before the couple came out and hit him with baseball bats. Two of the victim’s colleagues came to the rescue and pulled the victim towards a fence, but the Audi returned and drove inside as well, attaching one of them to a wall and a shutter. Soni, from Knightlow Road, Harborne, admitted to intentionally injuring herself, causing serious bodily harm, assault and possession of an assault rifle. He was imprisoned for eight years.
