Sunday: Heat continues, higher threat for storms with heavy rain, flooding possible
Heat warnings remain in effect for millions of people in southern Ontario and Quebec, as temperatures in the low 30s and humidity near or above 40 are expected. On Sunday, a boundary will slowly track south during the day, bringing more chances for thunderstorms to Central Canada. Thunderstorms will begin to develop across southwestern Ontario and eastern Quebec in the late afternoon and early evening as the boundary approaches the areas. Any storms that develop will have the potential to suck up copious amounts of tropical moisture into the atmosphere, causing very heavy rainfall locally as they drift eastward. There will be a risk of localized flooding. In addition, storms may also produce locally gale-force winds. The threat of urban and flash flooding extends to eastern Ontario and the eastern cities and Montreal in Quebec. An abundance of moisture may allow some storms to become severe across the regions, with the risk extending westward into an area of southern Ontario as well. Rainfall warnings are in effect for parts of eastern Ontario and southern Quebec, including Ottawa. The rain may lead to water logging on roads and localized flooding in low-lying areas. “If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance,” warns Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in its rainfall warning. However, the threat of storms will be localized and not everyone will see them or rain.
Monday: The stormy pattern remains, but the risk diminishes
Beyond the weekend, the active weather will continue on Monday. A developing low pressure system early Monday will allow more widespread showers and thunderstorms across southern Ontario and Quebec, but some areas will miss significant rainfall. The storm threat will remain limited to southern Ontario and should remain non-severe. Any storms that develop may bring heavy rain and strong winds. By Tuesday, the active weather subsides and temperatures will drop significantly from Monday and what was seen over the weekend. Also, the extreme heat and humidity will subside by the middle and end of this week.
