Police initially said the woman was hit by the train, but a TTC spokesman later clarified that the woman was able to roll under the rim of the platform, preventing her from being hit by the train.
On Monday, Toronto police released a surveillance image of the suspect in an attempt to identify her.
Police describe the suspect as having blond hair with a medium build. They say he was last seen wearing a gray “Levi’s” shirt, black jacket, black pants, white shoes, pink and gray buckles and holding a gray bag.
It is not clear why the suspect pushed the woman and police say there is no reason to believe the two women knew each other.
On Monday afternoon, Toronto Mayor John Tori issued a statement in response to the incident, calling it a “shocking attack.”
“I have spoken to Chief Ramer and he assures me that an intensive effort is being made to arrest the perpetrator,” he said.
“I am also assured that dedicated transit workers on duty at the time of the incident will receive support as required.”
“TTC is safe and must remain safe and I will monitor this incident to make sure that TTC and its partners, including the police, are doing everything possible to protect the safety of riders and transport staff.”
The incident prompted TTC to suspend subway service on line 2 between St. Louis stations. George and Broadview. Trains on Line 1 also bypassed Bloor-Yonge Station due to the incident.
Regular service continued on both metro lines shortly after 11 p.m.
This is the second time in five months that someone has been pushed into the lines at Bloor-Yonge subway station. On November 26, police said a suspect pushed a man who fell on the lines as he approached a train.
