Rishi Sunak has told Tory members the party will lose the 2024 general election if inflation is not brought under control – in a veiled warning of the dangers of electing Liz Truss as leader, who wants to cut taxes immediately. At a leadership meeting in Eastbourne, the former chancellor said he was “particularly concerned about policies that risk making it worse and longer”. As the event began, Ms Truss was heckled before continuing her speech to blame “invaders” and attack “unfair protests” that are “disrupting our democracy”. Earlier, Mr Sunak was filmed bragging about diverting funding from “underdeveloped urban areas” to more prosperous areas that “deserve it”. Labour’s Lisa Nundy urged the Government to investigate the “deeply disturbing” statements made to grassroots Tories in Kent last month – revealed in footage obtained by the New Statesman. He told supporters: “I’ve managed to start changing the types of funding, to make sure that areas like this get the funding they deserve because we inherited a bunch of formulas from Labor that pushed all the funding into deprived urban areas that needed to be undone. .”

Sunak presents Truss’s corporate tax plan

Mr Sunak took a look at Ms Truss’s plan to get rid of the big corporation tax hike. On what he will do to help businesses grow, the former chancellor told Tory leaders in Eastbourne: “We’ve had that debate about corporation tax. I don’t want to stay with the failed policies of the past. This is what some suggest. It hasn’t worked. “If we want businesses to really invest in the economy, expand their factories, put in more lines, produce more things, that’s how we create more jobs. So we reduce inflation if companies produce more. We need to cut taxes on these things.” He added: “The focus on corporation tax has not achieved this. Investing in this economy today, no better than it was a decade ago, despite us doing all these corporate tax things. “Because it’s not the right tax to focus on. And that is where my experience in business, my time as chancellor, my discussions with business have led me to the conclusion that we need to be much more radical. “We need to reform business taxes to reduce them to things that make a difference. And this is business investment, business innovation. If we implement these tax cuts, then we can help these businesses to expand, grow, create jobs and prosperity and make a significant contribution to reducing inflation.” Jane Dalton 5 August 2022 20:54 1659728874

The candidates’ policy briefs omitted the climate crisis

A member of the public reveals that a document sent to members outlining the candidates’ policies made no mention of the climate crisis. Mr Sunak said he believed in the net zero target, but rushing it would mean losing support. It was about building innovation, he claimed, and unlocking the ingenuity of the private sector, he said. Sunak hints that he may support leaving the EDA

No option should be off the table on whether to leave the European Court of Human Rights, says Mr Sunak. Not being able to tell countries to take back failed asylum seekers was “obviously embarrassing”, he added. And the UK needs to control its borders. Jane Dalton 5 August 2022 20:42 1659728286

Sunak: Tories will bid farewell to election victory unless inflation is brought under control

Asked if he will release data on various issues going wrong, Rishi Sunak advocates reforming public services to reduce citizens’ taxes. He said that unless inflation is under control, “we can bid farewell to victory in the next election.” Asked by host and former Downing Street adviser Jimmy McLoughlin what his aim would be to win a fifth term, Mr Sunak said: “Well, the first thing we have to do is make sure we can win these the election is over. this inflation problem until then. “And that’s why I’m particularly concerned about policies that risk making it worse and prolonging it. “Because this is a problem that is not just for this winter. It is a problem for next winter and beyond. “Because as the Bank of England has said it is concerned about inflation building in, then there is no hope of us winning this next election. None at all. It is so simple. “We all heard what they said yesterday, you all saw the numbers. And if we do not understand this thing and catch it quickly, then we can say goodbye to victory in the next election. “So the first thing we have to put ourselves in a position to win is to get over inflation and get over it quickly and not make things worse.” Jane Dalton August 5, 2022 8:35 pm 1659727069

Truss vows to ‘continue to stand up to Putin and Lavrov’

One audience member suggested that Vladimir Putin “must have been over the moon when Boris Johnson fell”, asking what Liz Truss would do to make the Russian president “less complacent and give heart to the brave Ukrainians”. That is why I intend to increase defense spending to 3 percent of GDP.” (EPA/ANDY RAIN) Andy Gregory5 August 2022 20:17 1659726772

Truss says more people need to go back to offices

Liz Truss said it was “important to get more people back into the office because we need to make sure our city and town centers thrive”. The Foreign Secretary said that “while it worked to some extent during Covid, I certainly got Zoom fatigue and there were a lot of people in the Civil Service who got Zoom fatigue, so I think we have to try and encourage people to come in the office more than they do today.” ( ) Andy Gregory5 August 2022 20:12 1659726495
