Oh no, there you go. Normally it would be a tough race to get a goal and a point to open the season. Not under Antonio Conte. Spurs pulled up their socks, laced up their boots and put on a show for fans and home fans around the world. Four goals were scored with two coming in each half and huge contributions from the full backs. Yes, the starting line-up was the same as last season’s closing games which propelled the team into the Champions League. A couple of injuries and others not being fully fit in Conte’s eyes forced him to have Ryan Sessegnon and Emerson Royal running on the flanks. They delivered. Sessegnon scored the opening goal and Royal added an assist (and our best friend an own goal) as the deciding factor in the game. Eric Dier scored for Spurs’ other goal from a defender, his first in more than three years (not including the pre-season rocket). Here are some game notes that came to mind while watching the Spurs march to victory

Sessegnon is big, in a good way of course. He had excellent pace and Kyle Walker-Peters was bouncing off the 21-year-old. His goal was superb and his second, called for offside, was excellent with the pattern practiced in openers. After going 1-0 down, Spurs took over at both ends of the pitch. They pressed hard with their fitness levels showing and the defense made big tackles to stop anything for Southampton. It’s frustrating to see Royal take too many touches in the box. It’s fun to watch and in the second half he looked to be looking out for open spaces with his pass to Dejan Kulusevski for the fourth and final goal. Son Heung-min and Harry Kane are out and normally that spells disaster for Spurs. Not anymore. Three new faces made their debuts for the club with Ivan Perisic getting 30 plus minutes and Yves Bissouma and Clement Lenglet under 10 minutes. Perisic had the most time to create chances and the boy can cross easily. The other two didn’t have much to do with the game on the bag, even though Bissouma put one in in the final seconds. Lucas Moura and Matt Doherty came on during the quadruple subs and didn’t show much, but that’s okay.

The first matchday is over and Tottenham are a force under Conte
