Former President Donald Trump was privately enjoying the chaos caused by the vague endorsement message he released that appeared to endorse two Missouri primary party candidates named “Eric,” Rolling Stone reported Tuesday. The publication spoke to a source close to Trump who said the former president enjoyed watching the candidates — Eric Greitens and Eric Schmidt — scramble for endorsements. According to Rolling Stone, the source said Trump “thought it was a beautiful thing and very funny” to watch the situation unfold. On Monday, Trump appeared to support Greitens and Schmidt in a post on Truth Social, but left it ambiguous about who “Eric” was supporting. “I trust the Great People of Missouri, on this, to make up their own minds, as they did when they gave me landslide victories in the 2016 and 2020 Elections, and therefore I am proud to announce that ERIC has their full and Complete endorsement!” Trump wrote in his post. Schmidt, the state attorney general, and Greitens, a former governor, tried to claim that Trump was referring to them. Politico reported that Trump’s odd endorsement was because he was running out of time after giving him a deadline to decide between Greitens and Schmidt. According to the agency, an unnamed third party had made the suggestion that Trump could leave the statement ambiguous and endorse “Eric” without specifying a last name. According to Politico’s sources, Trump requested the double approval after checking that both first names were identical. Decision Desk called the race for Schmitt, who at press time had pulled away from Greitens with a net 45.7 percent of the vote compared to the latter’s 19.22 percent. Greitens’ loss could represent a victory by factions of the GOP that didn’t want the MAGA-affiliated candidate to win his race. Missouri Republicans, for example, ran attack ads against Greitens, who has been accused of blackmail by a woman he had an affair with and domestic abuse by his ex-wife. Trump’s approval record has come under scrutiny amid the GOP midterms, particularly after bombshell testimony during Jan. 6 hearings about the former president’s behavior on the day of the Capitol riot. Top Democratic Party figures such as former Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Ted Cruz also appear to have distanced themselves from the former president, throwing their weight behind opponents of Trump-backed candidates. However, a Trump endorsement still seems to hold some sway in the ranks of the MAGA faithful. Former Trumpworld stalwart Mo Brooks, for one, unsuccessfully sought to re-endorse Trump for Trump’s re-election bid. That comes after Trump rescinded his endorsement of Brooks in March, saying the lawmaker was “woke” for the 2020 election. In May, Trump argued that his endorsement record was “unparalleled” and that Republican candidates should fear him and fall in line. However, Trump seems to have a habit of endorsing candidates who would win anyway, while his riskier picks like JD Vance and Dr. Mehmet Oz, have angered some of his supporters.
