The latest addition to Carlson’s work is called The End of Men and has just released its Magic Mike style trailer. It begins with a familiar make-up in the style of Make America Great Again, focusing on a speech by John F Kennedy in which he praises the virtues of strength and exercise and criticizes the “soft, plump and fat children” of America. Kennedy’s rational approach to childhood obesity is fast becoming synonymous with a sharp decline in sperm count and testosterone over the past 50 years. And then what could only be described as a series of money. Inflating a piece by Richard Strauss since 2001: A Space Odyssey – we see huge, obese top men cutting wood, milking cows, shooting guns, barbecuing, fighting, drinking egg yolks and more , to blacken their genitals. This supposed sequence of real red-blooded males is probably the most camp-breaking Fox News has since Glenn Beck gasping a handsome model. The deep homosexual version of Carlson’s real men looks more like xVideos than a city of former mining, but the testosterone-based view of masculinity it promotes has been a common theme for Fox News for the past decade and a lucrative one. The tanning of the testicles, or the “red light” treatment shown in the video, is further explained in an interview Carlson did with a self-proclaimed “bromotherapy” specialist. He claims that by throwing your balls with red LEDs, you can create higher testosterone levels. The ability of ultraviolet or red light to increase testosterone levels has been well documented, but there are no double-blind peer-reviewed studies that can prove these claims. Testosterone levels also change dramatically during the day and there are also dramatic increases from exercise, new sexual partners and dietary changes. In his new special offer on how to increase testosterone levels in men, Tucker Carlson’s guest suggests “testicular tanning” using infrared light as a “bromopathic” treatment. pic.twitter.com/PirerBMRyr – Ron Filipkowski 🇺🇦 (@RonFilipkowski) April 17, 2022 Unsurprisingly, Fox News suggests that the answer to all of humanity’s problems is related to testosterone. The channel has invested heavily in the idea that lowering testosterone makes men more liberal and less masculine, and many of its remaining advertisers are selling pills that promise to increase male testosterone levels. Fox News has invested heavily in the idea that lowering testosterone makes men more liberal and less masculine. I spent some time telling this story three years ago that testosterone was heavily politicized, especially by Trump-backed radio presenters who equated liberalism with a low T (a right-wing radio doctor even offered a free testosterone test to any listener who thought vote for Hillary Clinton). The US is full of ads for testosterone supplements that make a similar claim, many of which are featured on Fox News. Trump himself used to imply that his opponents were tired and had a “low T”. Many men inject testosterone into themselves for political reasons, but in reality the idea that testosterone is the “male” hormone and estrogen is the “female” is wrong. Both men and women have both hormones, at very different levels, and most men have much more testosterone than they need (indeed, testosterone, which is critical for heart function, is often converted to estrogen, which means that people who inject testosterone frequently end up growing breasts). Low testosterone can make some men feel tired and helpless and need replacement therapy, but others do just that with low blood testosterone levels. Carlson is right that sperm counts and total testosterone have been declining for the past 50 years due to lifestyle changes – including growing obesity. But the idea that this is somehow a manly problem and that if we just tanned our balls men would be happier is obviously untrue. The show is also a reflection of how far Carlson has moved in the world of pseudo-scientific solutions in recent years. Just four years ago he was still talking about falling testosterone levels, but as part of a wider psychological survey of men in America, breaking down why men were more likely to commit suicide, commit mass shootings, be imprisoned, receive medicines as children and perform worse than some educational measures. In the video above, Carlson takes a right-wing anti-feminist stance, but at least makes some reasonable remarks about the problems facing American men. Since then, Carlson has fallen into a deep trolling and insanity, preferring to enjoy wild medical interventions rather than political change. Maybe he would be happier doing some red light treatment instead of his red face treatment at night.
