Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli was furious after a controversial call during his team’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. The Twins and Blue Jays, both in the middle of playoff races, went to the 10th inning. Cavan Biggio stepped up and hit a pop fly that would send Whit Merrifield running for home plate. Merrifield was initially called out on the bang-bang play, but after a challenge and review, it was ruled safe because catcher Gary Sanchez was blocking the plate and did not create a lane for Merrifield. Target Field erupted into a loud chorus of boos and Baldelli exited the dugout fuming. The Twins manager threw his cap to the ground and was ejected from the game. Baldelli was not detained during the post-match press conference. “In all of baseball, the thousands of games and home runs where the catcher blocks the plate over and over and over again, that play has basically never been made,” he said via Bally Sports North. “And for someone to intervene in this situation and [decide] Someone was blocking the fun, this is beyond embarrassing for our game, for all the players out there on both sides of the pitch who work away all game long. It is completely unacceptable. “It’s one of the worst moments I think we’ve seen umpiring in any game I’ve ever been in baseball and I think it was pathetic.” Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, right, argues with the umpires after a review overturned a call that originally had Toronto Blue Jays’ Whit Merrifield at home in the 10th inning, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022, in Minneapolis. I’m just tagging him. I had the ball first. I think the line was open for him to slide to the sideline. He didn’t. It was a clean play,” Sanchez said. Merrifield spoke of what was on his mind as he headed home. “I had a feeling it was going to be a game at the plate,” he said. “I put my head down the first couple of steps and then I looked up and I tried to figure out how to get to home plate and I saw Gary touching home plate so I tried to slide into him, right into him as best I could I could. I know what the rule is, it was just a matter of if they were going to call it.” According to the Toronto Sun, crew chief Alan Porter said Sanchez was breaking the “home plate collision rule.” Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, right, argues with umpires Marty Foster, left, and Alan Porter after a review overturned a call that originally had Toronto Blue Jays’ Whit Merrifield in the 10th inning Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022. in Minneapolis.
