Ukraine is sending photos of dead Russian soldiers to their families, the Washington Post reports. Officials hope the horrific images will turn everyday Russians against the war. The bodies are being identified using face recognition technology donated to Ukraine by Clearview AI.
Ukraine is using face recognition software in a horrific campaign to turn Russian mothers against the war, the Washington Post reported on Friday. The free software, provided by the controversial US company Clearview AI, is used to scan and identify the faces of Russian soldiers who died on Ukrainian soil. Pictures of the bodies of Russian soldiers are then sent to their families in Russia, The Post reported. The hope is that the bleak reality of deaths on the battlefield will shock everyday Russians and turn them against the war. Both Ukraine and Russia have armed face recognition in the ongoing war. Russia uses technology to detect and arrest anti-war activists. Ukraine uses it to identify both its own dead and those of the enemy. Nearly 9,000 face recognition surveys have been conducted so far on dead or captured Russian soldiers, The Post reported. Russian families have been sent pictures of 582 dead soldiers, hacker volunteers working with the Ukrainian government told The Post. Clearview has been criticized for scraping social media images and using it by U.S. law enforcement. Ukraine’s free access to the software database with 2 million images from Russian social media demonstrates a new use of technology as anti-war propaganda. The strategy could fail, some warned. “Does it really work?” London-based monitoring researcher Stephanie Hare told The Post. “Or he does [Russians] say: “Look at these lawless, cruel Ukrainians doing this to our boys?” Read the original article in Business Insider
