Rinat Akhmetov, Ukraine’s richest man, has pledged to help rebuild the besieged city of Mariupol. The billionaire tycoon said the war-torn city on the Black Sea coast is important to him, as it is where Metinvest’s company has two steel mills that he says will once again compete globally. The conflict in Ukraine pushed his fortune down from 19 19 billion ($ 25 billion) in 2011 to 6 6.5 billion ($ 8.5 billion) last year. On Friday, Metinvest said it would never operate under Russian occupation and that the siege of Mariupol had deactivated more than a third of Ukraine’s metallurgical capacity. Ukraine, meanwhile, has claimed that 20,100 Russian soldiers have been killed in the 52 days of war since Vladimir Putin launched the invasion on February 24. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also said that in the last seven weeks, Russia has also lost 762 tanks, 1,982 armored combat vehicles, 371 artillery systems, 125 multiple rocket launchers, 66 air and 14 air-to-air weapons.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon responds after Putin’s ban on Russia
Reacting to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s decision to ban the country from some of the UK’s top politicians, Scotland’s first minister, Nicholas Sturgeon, called Putin a “war criminal”. Ms Sturgeon said on Saturday: “Putin is a war criminal and I will not shy away from condemning him and his regime. “Scotland is determined to take the strongest possible action to isolate and punish its regime and to do all it can to support the people of Ukraine. “We must ensure that those on the side of freedom and democracy work together to ensure that the Putin regime and its network of oligarchs are as isolated as possible. “The international condemnation – not only in words but also in deeds – against Russia must be as strong as possible. “It is the responsibility of every leader to choose a side to this unprovoked aggression. I am clear that I am on the side of Ukraine and against Putin. “And Scotland is clear – we are all on Ukraine’s side.” (Getty Images) Read the full story about the politicians who have been expelled from Russia here: Holly Bancroft 16 April 2022 16:59 1650123339
