Jones was fatally shot in a garage early Saturday morning.
According to police, Sigman got into a fight with another man at an Italian restaurant in Carrollton. The other man told security Sigman threatened to shoot him, police said. Security at the restaurant saw that Sigman had a gun and told him to leave. Sigman then left and walked to the parking deck.
“Investigation indicates that Sigman entered the parking deck and began shooting at a parked vehicle that was striking the victim. Friends immediately rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead,” Carrollton police wrote on Facebook.
“This case is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Carrollton Police Department.”
Carroll County Jail electronic records listed Sigman as “currently in custody” as of noon Sunday. No bond amount stated. It was unclear whether Sigman had legal representation.
The president of the University of West Georgia issued a statement Saturday. “The University of West Georgia has learned of the loss of one of its students, Anna Jones, who died following an off-campus incident earlier today,” said President Dr. Brendan Kelly.
“UWG has terminated Richard Sigman’s employment and continues to work with the City of Carrollton Police Department, who is leading this ongoing investigation. On behalf of the university, we wish to extend our deepest condolences to Anna’s family and many friends.” , Kelly said.
