The alarm was sounded by Novotel staff on the Fewster Way, just outside Fishergate, at about 3.30pm. It provoked a huge emergency response. A North Yorkshire police spokesman said: Sixteen staff members were affected by the leak. The Yorkshire ambulance was present and two people were taken to hospital with respiratory problems, the other 14 are currently being monitored. Leakage was identified as chlorine and reduced. The hotel has been evacuated and the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is currently conducting inspections to make sure the building is safe for visitors and staff to return.
