The teenagers killed were both 17-year-old men, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office. Eight other people were shot and five others were injured while running from the fire, Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert said. Here’s what we know about shooting.
More than 90 shots were fired
The shooting happened around 12:30 and as police arrived at the scene, they saw several young people running from the area, officials said. Investigators are still working to determine what led to the shooting, however, Schubert said there was some sort of clash when the shots were exchanged. Schubert described the scene as chaotic, with more than 90 bullets from multiple guns being fired both inside and outside the house. “You had people leaving, just trying to get out of there,” he said. “Up to 50 bullets were fired inside, forcing some party attendees to jump out of windows, sustaining injuries such as broken bones and injuries. Several other shots were heard outside the house,” the press release said. “We are here at Easter and we have many families, two of whom will not see a loved one,” said the leader. Investigators were gathering data from up to eight separate crime scenes, officials said Sunday morning.
Public schools in “modified lockdown”
Pittsburgh public schools used a “modified lockdown” on Monday in response to the shooting, which the district described as “horrific.” “So many Pittsburgh families have been affected by today’s tragedy,” interim supervisor Wayne N. Walters said in a statement. “A modified lockdown means that only people with scheduled appointments are allowed to enter or leave our buildings,” Walters said. “Our thoughts are with the families of the lost loved ones and anyone experiencing grief and trauma during this period,” he added. It is not clear if the victims of the shootings or party attendees were students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools area, but Schubert said that “the vast majority” of partygoers were minors.
The real estate tenant has now been “banned” by Airbnb
The person who closed the property where the party took place has been excluded from the platform for life, Airbnb said in a statement to CNN. Company officials said they “condemn the behavior that allegedly caused this criminal gun violence.” Airbnb contacted the Pittsburgh police station and the office of Mayor Ed Gainey, the statement said. Airbnb note parties are not permitted as part of the rental arrangements and this was “an unauthorized party, held without the knowledge or consent of the host”. Users must be 18 years of age or older to create an account on the platform, Airbnb said, adding that it is “considering all legal options” against the person who booked the rental. “We share the Pittsburgh community’s outrage over this tragic gun violence. Our hearts go out to all those affected – including loved ones who have died, injured people and neighbors,” Airbnb said in a statement. . CNN’s Laura James contributed to this report.
