The smart knob looks like a Nest mini thermostat, but Bezek has programmed it to have many functions. Of course, it can only function as a rotary selector, but you could also program the motor to provide tactile feedback and resistance, giving you the feeling that you have reached an end point where the selector can no longer rotate. Because this illusion is created through software instead of hardware, there is a lot you can do. It can act as a rotary on / off switch, fasten it back to the center after turning it and release it, and even simulate ratchet steps. When my colleagues and I heard about the knob, a Verge employee immediately suggested that it would be great for controlling the temperature of the shower. Another said they would use it as a fancy scroll wheel or volume control. Personally, I thought it would be a great way to determine how much food my cat feeds. According to Bezek’s GitHub page for the smart knob, the device (which has an unfinished design) can be built for “definitely less than $ 200 in spare parts.” The page also includes the code for the project, as well as an absolute wealth of information on how the knob is assembled and what parts it uses. Bezek also said on Twitter that he would make a video detailing the assembly and design process for his SmartKnob. Yes, the knob has USB-C. Image: Scott Bezek Even with the barebones firmware only, though, I still want to make one and use it as the ultimate fidget game. Maybe once a design is recorded and the accessories are available, I will be able to develop my skills to a point where I could master the advanced welding techniques needed to really make the smart knob. Bezek admits the “not yet mature plug-and-play” button, but says he will continue to work on it, and even has a roadmap on his GitHub page. I hope he manages to turn it into a real thing that is practical to do yourself – I want a future where I can build an army of knobs to control everything in my house. Do I need to adjust the TV volume? Handle. Do you want to turn off my camera and end a Zoom call with one tap instead of a push of a button? Handle. Do you want to stop delaying writing an article? I can not think of how to solve it with a knob yet, but I assure you I will understand. What would you use a smart knob for?
