The fogging is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. Sunday night, weather permitting, the city says. The areas designated for fogging are Insect Management Areas 1-9, 47, 49, 50 and 51. A map of the areas is available on the city’s website: Winnipeg’s mosquito activity score, which includes an analysis of trap counts, was upgraded to high from moderate on Saturday. The average number of traps across the city was 88 on Saturday. Three factors determine when to mist the insect box:

City-wide analysis of coming-of-age factors must be high. The average number of traps across the city should be at least 25 female mosquitoes for two consecutive nights. One or more city blocks must report at least 100 adult female mosquitoes.

Misting, using DeltaGard 20EW insecticide, occurs between 9:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. unless temperatures drop below 13 C or wind speeds are very high. People can sign up to receive alerts when fog is set to appear either on the City of Winnipeg website or by calling 311. Residents can apply for a 90-foot buffer zone to exempt their property during an adult mosquito control program by contacting 311 or the pest control branch. The city is asking residents to help reduce mosquitoes by eliminating standing water on their properties, filling in low-lying areas where water can pool and applying larvicide to properties.
