The unidentified female suspect opened fire on lawmakers inside a car five miles outside the town of Winfield, about 40 miles southeast of Wichita. “Earlier today, deputies were sent to the area for a suspicious vehicle,” Cowley County Sheriff Dave Falletti told KSN-TV on the side of a rural highway. “During this contact, fire was exchanged. “Three deputies were beaten and a person riding in the vehicle is dead.” The injured MPs were taken to a Wichita hospital and two of them are expected to be released later in the day, officials said. The third victim was seriously injured, but was expected to recover. The dead woman was the only person in the car and it was not clear what caused the fight, Falletti said. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation investigated the incident.
